Here at the John Muir rest area entering Marquette County, I followed the instructions and took a rest, in yesterday’s blazing heat.
John Muir, whose family moved to this part of rural Wisconsin from Scotland in 1849 when John was 11. He dropped out of college and headed west and starting lobbying Congress to preserve the wilderness. I like this guy! Plus, to a certain extent, he succeeded: he wrote to Congress so persistently and so persuasively that the passed the National Park Act in 1890 just to shut him up!
